Gigabit wireless technology is necessary for future wireless networks, requiring higher-than-1Gbps data transmission with low transmit power. Researchers have been studying Distributed Antenna Network (DAN) and frequency-domain wireless signal processing. DAN involves many antennas or clusters of antennas spatially distributed over a service area, connected by optical fiber links, and cooperatively serving mobile users using spatial multiplexing, diversity, array, or relaying techniques. Technical issues in gigabit wireless channels include frequency-selective fading, limited bandwidth, and limited transmit power, which can be addressed by DAN combined with frequency-domain signal processing. A promising solution is gigabit Single-Carrier (SC)-DAN, which uses frequency-domain equalization and has a lower peak-to-average power ratio than multi-carrier transmission. Researchers have developed a frequency-domain space-time block coded joint transmit/receive diversity (FD-STBC-JTRD) technique for DAN downlink transmissions, which achieves an N×M-th order diversity gain and allows the use of up to four mobile terminal receive antennas. For uplink transmissions, frequency-domain space-time transmit diversity (FD-STTD) is promising, allowing the use of an arbitrary number of distributed receive antennas. Computer simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques in achieving gigabit wireless data transmissions.
