Summary

The French National Research and Education Network, RENATER, implemented a Global Internet Exchange point (GIX) based on white box hardware and a commercial network operating system, OcNOS, to renew its GIX, SFINX, in 2020. The objectives were to evaluate the white box solution, increase independence from traditional vendors, provide new alternative solutions, and reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The implementation was successful, with the white boxes replacing existing Brocade MLX switches, and the TCO was reduced. The SFINX architecture is simple, based on a Layer 2 VLAN setup, and the technical implementation of the GIX use case was successful, with the configuration based on white boxes manufactured by Dell and OcNOS from IP Infusion.
