Summary

High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) are being developed as a solution for "Last mile" communication problems, offering broadband wireless access to fixed networks. The SCP-RPSC approach, a new technology for virtual electronic beam steering of high-gain antennas, has been applied to HAPS communications. HAPS systems have advantages over terrestrial and satellite systems, including better signal quality, reduced shadowing effects, and less propagation delay. They can provide rapid coverage and high capacity, serving densely populated areas and complementing existing infrastructure. However, HAPS technology still faces problems, such as maintaining platform position and orientation, and addressing issues related to wind and system blockage.
