Summary

The Howland Current Pump is a high-impedance current source that uses an operational amplifier to produce both positive and negative output currents. It has two basic circuits: the Basic Howland Current Pump and the "Improved" Howland Current Pump. The circuit is useful for testing devices, forcing currents into sensors, and biasing diodes or transistors. It was invented by Prof. Bradford Howland of MIT in 1962 and first published in 1964. The circuit's elegance arises from the equal strength feedback from the output to both the positive and negative inputs, allowing it to accept positive or negative inputs and produce true differential inputs.
