Summary

Internet routing faces a scalability challenge due to the growing global routing table, despite IPv4 address shortages, and potential exacerbation with IPv6 deployment. The root cause is the need to preserve the end-to-end model while accommodating increasing network scale and management complexity. A proposed solution separates globally routable addresses (GRA) from globally deliverable addresses (GDA), achieving improved routing scalability, ease of site-multihoming, and elimination of user renumbering. This approach facilitates IPv6 deployment at edge sites without requiring immediate changes to large IPv4 deployments, balancing architectural changes with preservation of current practices.
