Summary

The digital world's increasingly complex socio-technical systems (STS) challenge traditional design and evaluation methods, prompting the need for new evaluation approaches. This paper proposes developing STS heuristics by combining research areas like CSCW, job design, usability heuristics, and socio-technical design principles. Existing usability heuristics are insufficient for evaluating STS due to their broader context, involving human-computer interaction, teamwork, and technology-mediated collaboration. The authors suggest revising existing heuristics or creating new ones, such as socio-technical walkthroughs, to address the complexity of STS design and development. Two approaches are proposed: conducting expert surveys or building upon existing heuristics and principles to derive a comprehensive set of STS heuristics.
