Summary

LMS and XMSS are two hash-based signature schemes proposed in the IETF as quantum secure alternatives to traditional public key signatures. Both schemes use hash trees and one-time signature (OTS) schemes, but have different security assumptions, signature and public key sizes, and computation overhead. LMS uses the Winternitz one-time signature (WOTS) as its OTS and supports only SHA-256 as its hash function, while XMSS uses a variant of WOTS (WOTS+) and supports SHA-256, SHA-512, and SHAKE. The multi-level versions of LMS and XMSS, HSS and XMSSMT, support up to eight independent levels of trees and use blinding masks to enhance security. The security of both schemes is based on the strength of the hash function used, and they are designed to prevent forgery by requiring an attacker to generate a hash preimage or second preimage.
