Summary

Shopping bots are automated software applications that allow consumers to easily search for and compare product prices from online retailers. A follow-up study to a previous project investigated the temporal stability of findings two years later, comparing the functionality and performance of 16 shopping bots. The study found that no 'best' shopping bot exists, and all bots often present inaccurate product price and availability information, with a positive relationship between the amount of incorrect product information and the number of online vendors. Supplemental information provided to users remains deficient, and differences in product prices were observed. The study concludes that shopping bots are still in an emerging stage of development, and more research is needed to understand their functionality, performance, and potential impact.
