Linux's existing IO interfaces, including read, write, pread, pwrite, and aio, have limitations, such as being synchronous, having poor performance, and lacking features. The native aio interface is limited to ODIRECT accesses and has issues with blocking, API complexity, and memory copying. Efforts to improve aio were abandoned due to complexity and maintainability issues. A new interface, iouring, was designed with goals of being easy to use, extendable, feature-rich, efficient, and scalable, aiming to provide a better IO experience for applications.
