Summary

Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) scaling is destined to conclude due to fundamental limitations, prompting research into new devices as replacements. Novel switches using alternative state variables such as spin, excitonic, photonic, magnetic, quantum, or heat domains are being explored. These devices may enable unique architectures and extend throughput in high-performance computing. New transport mechanisms are also required to replace conventional chip wire interconnect schemes. Researchers are investigating various devices, including tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs) and quantum-dot cellular automata (QCAs), to demonstrate significant advantages over ultimate FETs in power, performance, density, and/or cost.
