Summary

A language can be represented as a set of ordered pairs of mutually compatible elements, forming a lattice. Every string of words in a language can be obtained by successive concatenation of these elements. A grammar can be defined as a set of rules to generate the language, and it is possible to devise a system of electrical connections to simulate translation between two languages. A vocabulary is a set of words, and a grammar consists of rules to combine these words into sentences. The rules classify words and strings into categories, and a list of categories that are sentences. The construction of a complete system for analogue translation may be impractical, but partial networks can be useful for demonstrating purposes.
