Summary

Native applications remain important despite improving web technology, with Google and Apple adding web interfaces to their native payment apps, now a W3C standard known as PaymentRequest. Native apps have an edge over web apps in interacting with OS-level components and are usable in non-web contexts. However, they can be impractical for enrollment and constrain user sign-up and authentication. The current standard for invoking native apps from the web, custom URL handlers, has limitations, including lack of security context and awkward task management. PaymentRequest addresses these issues and may be relevant for other applications, potentially introducing no new vulnerabilities beyond URL handlers.
