Summary

Nominal schemas are proposed as a description-logic style extension of OWL 2, allowing the expression of arbitrary DL-safe rules within the native syntax of ontology languages. This feature enables the integration of rules and ontologies without increasing the worst-case reasoning complexity. A novel tractable language, SROELV3(⊓, ×), is identified, which can capture the lightweight languages OWL EL and OWL RL. The introduction of nominal schemas allows for the expression of rules that were previously not expressible in description logics, such as the rule defining a class of children whose parents are married. The use of nominal schemas provides a seamless integration with DL syntax, achieving what was previously only possible with hybrid approaches. The language SROELV3(⊓, ×) is considered the most promising candidate for implementations, offering a balance between expressivity and tractability.
