Summary

A reliable distributed network service requires provisions to prevent accidental or malicious attacks on servers and clients. The Network Time Protocol (NTP) contains provisions for cryptographic authentication, but lacks a scheme for distributing cryptographic keys and retrieving cryptographic media. Conventional key agreement and digital signatures can cause performance degradations, especially in time-critical applications like NTP. A revised security model and authentication scheme called autokey has been proposed, which combines Public-Key Infrastructure (PKI) with a pseudo-random sequence generated by repeated hashes of a cryptographic value. The autokey protocol is designed to meet objectives such as interoperating with the existing NTP architecture, providing independent collection of cryptographic and time values, and using only public values transmitted over the net.
