The network used Motorola 7181 outdoor APs, with some connected to the core network via fiber, and others meshing back via 5GHz bridges. A passive site survey was performed using TamoGraph and Kismet, scanning all available channels in Canada, with a GPS receiver connected to TamoGraph. The survey revealed inconsistent coverage, with only 70% of the city having a signal equal to or greater than -70dBm, and suboptimal channel distribution on the 2.4GHz band, introducing co-channel contention. Stress tests were also performed to quantify smart meter traffic and its impact on the 2.4GHz spectrum.
