The future of the internet may render traditional service provider business models obsolete, as edge-based services and over-the-top (OTT) services become more prevalent, allowing users to access their favorite services from any device without needing service provider involvement. OTT services, such as those offered by Google, Yahoo, and social networks, provide value to end-users without generating revenue for traditional carriers. As a result, service providers may no longer "own the customer," and their role may shift to providing high-quality access to information, potentially leveraging technologies like Deep Packet Inspection and DOCSIS to offer quality of service (QoS) and fair use traffic management. Service providers may also offer QoS tailored to specific applications and services, and leverage customer information, such as presence and location, to provide value-added services. However, even these opportunities may eventually be usurped, leaving service providers to adapt to a new reality.
