Summary

The aim of this workshop is to explore different ways of thinking about time in HCI, distinguishing between time as experienced and time as measured by a clock or computer algorithm. Recent efforts in HCI have focused on designing slow technologies and addressing busyness, but the concept of time is often taken for granted. The workshop aims to unpack different ways of thinking about time, drawing on concepts such as Bergson's temps and durée, and ancient Greek concepts of Chronos and Kairos. The goal is to inspire and frame the design of innovative technologies, rather than prioritizing one way of thinking about time over another. Topics to be explored include representing time, time as now in search, and time as fleeting in social media, with the aim of opening up a design space for reflection on personal experience and investigating alternative metaphors for representing time.
