Summary

Researchers propose a new message transport protocol (MTP) to address the limitations of TCP in in-network computing, which requires offloads, fine-grained load-balancing, and performance isolation. TCP's stream abstraction is incompatible with these needs, and its limitations include data mutation, low buffering and computation requirements, inter-message independence, multi-resource and multi-algorithm congestion control, and multi-entity isolation. MTP introduces a message transport protocol and pathlet congestion control to meet these requirements, enabling efficient multi-path congestion control, significant throughput improvement, and stronger isolation among entities.
