Summary

Researchers propose automatically creating capsule wardrobes by assembling a minimal set of garments that provides maximal mix-and-match outfits. They pose the task as a subset selection problem and develop submodular objective functions to capture visual compatibility, versatility, and user-specific preference. An iterative approach allows near-optimal submodular function maximization, and an unsupervised method learns visual compatibility from "in the wild" full-body outfit photos. The approach is evaluated on thousands of garments from fashion websites, showing potential to mimic skilled fashionistas in assembling flexible wardrobes while being more scalable.
