The paper "Recognizing Rare Social Phenomena in Conversation: Empowerment Detection in Support Group Chatrooms" by Elijah Mayfield, David Adamson, and Carolyn Penstein Ros´e proposes a technique for automated annotation of social behavior in conversation, specifically empowerment language in online support group chatrooms. The authors address the challenge of recognizing rare social phenomena in conversation, which are often sparse and appear only in specific subsections of a conversation, making supervised machine learning difficult. They propose within-instance content selection, using cue features to selectively suppress sections of text and biasing the remaining representation towards minority classes. The technique is shown to be significantly more accurate than multiple baselines, especially when prioritizing high precision.
