Summary

Researchers investigated the effectiveness of using rich annotations in DNN-based statistical speech synthesis, focusing on the construction of context, which is a variation factor of phonetic and prosodic features. They used the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ), which has a large amount of annotations on paralinguistic features such as prosody, disfluency, and morphological features. Experimental evaluation results showed that the reproducibility of paralinguistic features of synthetic speech was enhanced by adding such information as context. The study used a pipeline framework, which consists of text analysis and duration and acoustic feature models, and encoded contextual factors into real-valued vectors to enable DNN training. The results demonstrated the importance of using detailed annotations in spontaneous speech synthesis.
