Summary

NICT participated in the WAT-2018 shared translation task, specifically Myanmar (Burmese) - English task in both translation directions, using state-of-the-art neural machine translation (NMT) and phrase-based statistical machine translation (PBSMT) systems. The NMT systems were trained with the Transformer architecture on the provided parallel data, and pre-ordering technology was adopted for both NMT and PBSMT. The results showed that the NMT systems outperformed the PBSMT systems, and the ensemble decoding significantly improved the translation quality. The pre-ordering technology slightly improved the translation quality in PBSMT, but not in NMT. According to the official human evaluation, the NMT systems ranked first in English-to-Myanmar and second in Myanmar-to-English.
