Summary

Physically based shading models were explored for a broader range of materials after success with hair shading on Tangled. The goal was to increase visual richness, consistency, and artist productivity. Various models were considered, including Lambert, Ashikhmin-Shirley, and He et al., but none perfectly fit the measured data. A new BRDF viewer was developed to compare and visualize measured and analytic BRDFs, revealing features not well represented by known models. The microfacet model was used to define the BRDF, and a new model was developed and adopted in production, providing a balance of simplicity, robustness, and artistic control.
