Approximately 1.2 billion mobile phone handsets will be manufactured in 2008, with over 200 million including cameras with micro actuators for automatic focus and over 10 million incorporating optical zoom. To meet the demand for thinner cameras, New Scale Technologies developed the SQUIGGLE motor, a tiny, high-force motor capable of sub-micrometer stepping and velocity control, and a new ultrasonic piezo motor for Ultra-Thin Auto Focus cameras, which combines the motor with the linear guide mechanism to enable camera thickness less than 5 millimeters.
