Summary

Researchers at Stanford University's Digital Libraries Lab designed and implemented the Power Browser, a web browsing facility for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) with limited capabilities, such as low bandwidth, small display, and slow CPU. The browser uses an HTTP proxy to fetch web pages and dynamically generates summary views, representing link structure and content, to be transmitted to the client. The implementation supports wireless browsing from 3Com's Palm Pilot and resulted in a 45% gain in browsing speed and a 42% reduction in required pen movements. The Power Browser analyzes and displays link structure of browsed pages dynamically and provides specialized pen-based navigation facilities, without requiring server-side content adjustments.
