Summary

Bugs in video games can have a negative impact on both developers and users, and it's common for games to release with bugs that are fixed through subsequent updates. Researchers analyzed 12,122 bug fixes from 723 updates for 30 popular games on Steam, categorizing them using a taxonomy of bug types. The most frequent bug types were Information, Game Graphics, and Action, while Crash, Game Graphics, and Triggered Event were the most recurring. The survey of game developers found that testing, game design, and code quality were the most common aspects linked to bug recurrence. The results can help developers identify which bug types to prioritize and adjust their development practices to better prevent, identify, and fix bugs.
