Summary

Query-by-example (QBE) in ontology-based data access is studied, where a query complying with specified examples is sought. The problem QBE(L, Q) is formalized for ontology language L and query language Q, with input consisting of a knowledge base, sets of positive and negative examples, and a signature. The goal is to determine if a query exists that satisfies the examples. Characterizations, algorithms, and complexity bounds are provided for QBE(L, Q) with L being expressive Horn DL and Q being conjunctive or union of conjunctive queries. Decision procedures and matching lower bounds are established, with complexities ranging from ExpTime to 2-ExpTime, depending on the specific case. The size of witness queries is also investigated, showing they can be double exponentially large.
