Summary

Reactive rules are used for programming rule-based, reactive systems on the Web, which detect events and respond automatically. Two approaches are presented: Event-Condition-Action (ECA) rules and production rules, with concrete languages XChange and ILOG Rule Language (IRL) used as examples. These rules enable reactive behavior on the Web, such as update propagation in distributed information portals, and can be used separately or combined to leverage their advantages.
