Computer programming is essential for utilizing computers, and programming exercises typically involve creating programs while viewing the computer display, executing them, and verifying the results. However, students in humanities departments often struggle with programming due to the required mathematical thinking.

A previous report utilized robots for programming education for science and technology students, which proved effective. This method allows students to confirm the program's operation through the robot's movement, making it a valuable introduction to computer programming education.

To adapt this method for humanities students, a robot-based programming exercise was developed and implemented, and a survey was conducted to evaluate its effectiveness. The results showed that students enjoyed the exercise and found it helpful for programming education.

The traditional programming education method focuses on learning programming language grammar, which can lead to neglect of algorithmic thinking. In contrast, the proposed method emphasizes learning basic program structures and applying them to solve problems.

The robot-based programming exercise offers several advantages, including the development of problem-solving and logical thinking skills, experiential learning, and the ability to use various programming languages.

The exercise was implemented in a 3-year course with 7 students, divided into groups to promote cooperative learning. The programming language used was Java, chosen for its potential usefulness in future system development and student interest.

The exercise consisted of 9 sessions, covering topics such as robot assembly, programming basics, and sensor handling. The final goal was to create a program that could trace an elliptical black line using the robot. The results of the survey and the exercise's effectiveness are reported.
