Summary

Theoretical analysis of an ideal startup scheme in multihomed SCTP, where the initial congestion window on the alternate path is set to an estimate of the available bandwidth, shows potential performance gains. Three scenarios where a path swap may occur are identified, along with relevant traffic patterns. The study quantifies the theoretically feasible performance gains by setting the initial congestion window to an ideal size, assuming correct and stable bandwidth estimation. Results indicate the benefit from an improved startup scheme is most considerable for applications with real-time requirements, such as video-conferencing, and increases with rising RTTs.
