Summary

Socio-technical systems design methods consider human, social, and organizational factors in system design, but are rarely used due to difficulties in application and disconnection from technical engineering issues. A pragmatic approach to socio-technical systems engineering (STSE) is proposed, building on research from work design, information systems, computer-supported cooperative work, and cognitive systems engineering. STSE aims to bridge the gap between organizational change and system development, addressing problems of usability and incompatibility with technical systems development methods.
