Summary

The forward voltage of a pn junction can be measured to estimate the junction temperature of a semiconductor device, but correct results may not be obtained if the measurement is performed incorrectly. A change of around -2 mV/°C in the temperature characteristics of the forward voltage of pn junctions can be utilized to measure the temperature characteristics of a pn junction existing inside the device. The distance between the heat source and the sensing diode can cause a large temperature difference, so it's necessary to measure the temperature using the pin specified by the device manufacturer. The thermal characteristics parameter ΨJT can be used to estimate the junction temperature, and it's recommended to use this method as there are few devices with a sensing diode at an appropriate position.
