Summary

The use of threads in concurrent programming is problematic due to their nondeterministic nature, making it difficult for programmers to reason about and predict the behavior of concurrent systems. Despite being a dominant approach, threads discard essential properties of sequential computation, such as understandability, predictability, and determinism. Instead of relying on threads, the development of concurrent coordination languages based on sound, composable formalisms is proposed to yield more reliable and concurrent programs. The difficulty of concurrent programming is attributed to the chosen abstractions, which do not resemble the concurrency of the physical world, and a new approach is needed to replace the conventional metaphor of a sequence of steps with the notion of a community of interacting entities.
