Vehicular networks' reliability depends on the density of DSRC-enabled vehicles, but in highway scenarios, the probability of a disconnected network can be high, hindering communication. Road Side Units (RSUs) can improve communication, but their cost requires minimizing their number while still providing significant improvement. This study models the average time to propagate a packet to disconnected nodes with connected and disconnected RSUs, comparing the results to a model with no RSUs. Significant improvements are shown with RSU deployments, particularly in multi-cluster communication scenarios, with transmission delays reduced by 15-30% for single-gap communications and up to 25% for multi-gap communications with disconnected RSUs.
