Summary

Wavelet noise is a new technique that addresses problems with aliasing and detail loss in traditional noise functions, such as Perlin noise, used in 3D computer graphics. It uses wavelet analysis to construct a multiresolution noise function that is almost perfectly band-limited, providing good detail with minimal aliasing. The technique involves creating an image of random noise, downsampling it, upsampling it, and subtracting the upsampled image from the original to create a band-limited noise image. This approach can be used to texture 2D surfaces with 3D noise functions while maintaining band-limited character, and is easy to implement and fast.
