Genetic algorithms (GAs) are successfully applied to various problems, but they can also demonstrate poor results. To understand when GAs will fail, the concept of 'deception' has been introduced, which refers to situations where a GA might fail to find the optimal solution. Deceptive functions create problems for GAs during optimization tasks. Several reasons are known to make problems difficult for GAs to solve, including the fitness landscape, which presents a powerful metaphor for global optimization. Measures such as the Negative Slope Coefficient (NSC) and Fitness Distance Correlation (FDC) have been proposed to define interesting characteristics of a fitness landscape. However, these measures have drawbacks, and new measures, such as the New Negative Slope Coefficient (NNSC), are being proposed to address these limitations. The paper evaluates the effectiveness of the NSC measure and proposes guidelines for further development of comparable methods.
