The Saimaa Geopark area covers 6,063km2, including 2,031km2 of water and 4,032km2 of land, spanning across Mikkeli, Juva, Sulkava, Puumala, Ruokolahti, Imatra, Lappeenranta, Savitaipale, and Taipalsaari. Saimaa Geopark ry, established in 2016, aims to develop the area, having applied for UNESCO Global Geopark status, and collaborates with local businesses and tourism organizations, following sustainable tourism principles, with 65 geosites, including Imatrankoski, Kruunupuiston hiidenkirnu, and Astuvansalmen kalliomaalaukset.
