BT.1886 is a gamma function for flat panel displays used in HDTV studio production, adopted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2011. It differs from previous gamma functions by taking into account the performance of a device at its blackest level and allowing for independent adjustment of brightness and contrast controls. BT.1886 provides clearer differentiation between the first few steps out of black, making it easier to ensure consistent viewing on different display technologies. Its advantages include creating a closer match between different display devices, eliminating clipping at the dark end of the scale, and providing a smoother and more even curve. SpectraCal recommends using BT.1886 for all High Definition video applications, particularly in the broadcast, production, and post-production industries. However, it should not be used when a colorspace target defines its own gamma function, such as the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) colorspace definition.
