Summary

Setup is the last stage of the violin making process, involving all parts that the strings touch, plus the soundpost. It's a critical skill that benefits from constant repetition, and many makers are minimally skilled at setup. Learning setup starts with numbers and measurements, but later becomes a more creative discipline. The setup process is presented from the top of the instrument down, starting with fitting pegs, which should be parallel, straight, and project equally from the peg box walls. Pegs should fit perfectly, be lubricated, and have a smooth, polished surface. Criteria for fitting pegs include being parallel to each other and the instrument's axis, projecting equally, and fitting tightly in both sides of the peg box. Peg shapers, such as the all-brass German type, are used to shape pegs to the correct size and taper. The shaper blade must be adjusted to match the taper of the reamer, and sharpened bluntly to scrape rather than cut.
