Le radio broadcasting trasmettono in WFM (fm larga) con deviazione +/-75khz e larghezza di banda 200Khz, mentre gli apparati radioamatoriali trasmettono in NFM (fm stretta) con deviazione +/-5Khz e larghezza di banda 25Khz (wide) o +/-2.5 Khz e larghezza di banda 12,5Khz (narrow). La differenza sostanziale tra le due modalità è nella banda passante, con la radio settata in wide si può ascoltare una modulazione in narrow perfettamente, ma con una modulazione un po' bassa, mentre con la radio settata in narrow si riceve un segnale più intellegibile per via della banda passante più stretta che "raccoglie" meno rumore.
