Summary

A phase I clinical trial evaluated the safety of intra-articular injected adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) in 18 patients with severe knee osteoarthritis. The trial consisted of three cohorts with escalating doses of ASCs (2, 10, and 50 million cells). After 6 months, the procedure was found to be safe, with no serious adverse events reported. Patients treated with low-dose ASCs experienced significant improvements in pain levels and function. The study suggests that intra-articular injection of ASCs is a safe therapeutic alternative for treating severe knee osteoarthritis, and a placebo-controlled phase IIb study is being initiated to assess clinical and structural efficacy.
