Summary

Thecostraca, a subclass of Crustacea, comprises three major groups: Cirripedia, Ascothoracida, and Facetotecta. A phylogenetic analysis of Thecostraca, based on molecular and larval morphological characters, reveals character evolution in major lineages. Morphological apomorphies are identified in larval morphology for almost all major branches within Thecostraca. The evolution of parasitism, obligatory in three major taxa, is discussed, and it is concluded that the last common ancestor to the Cirripedia was likely a suspension feeder. The advanced metamorphosis and endoparasitism in Rhizocephala and Facetotecta are the result of convergent evolution. Reproductive systems vary, ranging from separate sexes to pure hermaphroditism. The Thecostraca provide excellent opportunities for studying the evolution of complex life history traits, which can now be better analyzed and understood in a robust phylogenetic framework.
