Piranhas and their relatives are a challenging group to study systematically, with difficulties in species identification, linking juveniles to adults, and recognizing higher-level clades. A study using molecular data from three mitochondrial regions found robust support for the monophyly of Serrasalmus manueli, but not for Serrasalmus gouldingi. The data also rejected the monophyly of the genera Serrasalmus and Pristobrycon, and instead found a well-supported clade comprising Serrasalmus, Pygocentrus, and Pristobrycon (in part). This clade is characterized by the presence of a pre-anal spine and ectopterygoid teeth, and is estimated to have originated around 1.8 million years ago. The study suggests that the term "piranha" should be restricted to this clade, or expanded to include other related taxa.
