Summary

The increasing consumption of pharmaceuticals for human and animal treatment, as well as inadequate disposal procedures, has led to a rise in environmental pollution. Pharmaceuticals, often resistant to biodegradation, can disrupt biological wastewater treatment processes. Traditional wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove pharmaceutical contaminants, resulting in their introduction into water bodies and soil. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of selected antibiotics, sulfanilamide and erythromycin, on activated sludge dehydrogenase activity using the trifenyltetrazolinum chloride (TTC) test. The results showed a decrease in dehydrogenase activity with increasing antibiotic concentrations, with the lowest activity observed at a sulfanilamide concentration of 150 mg/l, resulting in a 31% inhibition of dehydrogenase activity.
