Summary

Private John WAUGH, Service Number 2-468, 26th Battalion Tyneside Irish, Northumberland Fusiliers, died on July 1, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. He was part of the Tyneside Irish Brigade, which was raised in the North East in 1914 and recruited 5,331 soldiers in 96 days. The brigade was assigned to attack the village of La Boisselle, a strategic location that would open up the road to Bapaume. The attack began with a week-long artillery bombardment and the detonation of two huge mines, but the Germans were well-prepared and inflicted heavy casualties on the British troops. The 26th Tyneside Irish advanced with bayonets fixed and took the German second line, but were forced to retreat due to lack of numbers and support. John WAUGH was one of the 156 soldiers killed in action, and his body was never recovered. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and face 10B, 11B, and 12B.
