Private Edward THURLAWAY, service number 24-1724, was a member of the 24th Tyneside Irish Service Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on July 1, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, specifically the attack on La Boisselle. The Tyneside Irish were part of a larger offensive that included the explosion of two huge mines, one near the road and one at Lochnagar. Despite initial advances, the Germans regrouped and inflicted heavy casualties on the Allied troops, including the 24th Tyneside Irish. Edward THURLAWAY was one of 634 casualties suffered by his battalion, including 147 killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and face 10B, 11B, and 12B.
