Summary

The Missouri Folk Arts Program (MFAP) has been working to discover and promote "unknown" artists in the state. Inspired by Elaine J. Lawless' article "Folklore As a Map of the World," the program has been using a network of advisors and field surveys to find these artists. Recently, the MFAP launched the Community Scholars Workshop Series, which introduces participants to the field of public folk arts and connects them with traditional artists. The program has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to continue the project, which has already held workshops in West Plains, St. Louis, and Springfield, featuring artists such as Gordon McCann, Don Graves, Marideth Sisco, and Mahmoud Conteh.
