An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) was used as a detector for gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of organotin compounds, offering highly sensitive detection and calibration by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). Organotin compounds have toxic effects on the environment and human health, and their analysis is crucial in various matrices, including marine and fresh-water sediments, seafood, and human blood samples. GC-ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS were compared for organotin analysis, with GC-ICP-MS enabling simultaneous multi-elemental speciation analysis and HPLC-ICP-MS offering the advantage of no derivatization required. ICP-MS detection provided low limits of detection (pg-ng range) and enabled calibration by IDMS, reducing measurement uncertainties and increasing precision.
