Customs cooperation between countries is crucial due to increased trade liberalisation, which demands efficient and rapid customs services. Customs play a key role in revenue collection, social protection, and encouraging investment and trade expansion. The modern trading environment, with its emphasis on 'just in time' deliveries and multinational company operations, increases pressure on customs to modernise and provide flexible services. International cooperation is essential in combating sophisticated international fraud and organised crime. Actions are split into two categories: trade facilitation and combating fraud. Trade facilitation involves simplification and harmonisation of legislation and practices, while combating fraud requires the exchange of information between customs administrations. The EU has been actively involved in customs cooperation, particularly with its major trading partners and neighbours, and has provided technical assistance to countries undergoing major restructuring. Cooperation between customs services is necessary to tackle common problems, such as unregulated traffic and crime, and to promote legitimate trade.
