Summary

The expulsion of professors in Nazi Germany had significant consequences for PhD student outcomes, with faculty quality being a key determinant of short- and long-run outcomes. A one-standard-deviation increase in faculty quality increased the probability of publishing a dissertation in a top journal by 13 percentage points, becoming a full professor by 10 percentage points, having positive lifetime citations by 16 percentage points, and the number of lifetime citations by 6.3. The dismissal of mathematics professors in Nazi Germany provided exogenous variation in university quality, allowing for the estimation of the causal effect of university quality on PhD student outcomes.
